Up to now, over 1,1 million Americans have contracted the HIV virus. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year some 56.000 people are newly infected. Most at risk the poorer urban areas, where 2,1% of the heterosexual population carries the AIDS virus. In many of those areas, AIDS has reached epidemic proportions.
