ROMANIA: CEAUCESCU BODIES EXHUMED FOR DNA TESTS

The bodies of Nicolae and Elena Ceaucescu have been exhumed for DNA testing to confirm their identities. The request for their exhumation has come from Mircea Oprean, husband of Zoe Ceaucescu, the dictator’s daughter, also deceased. The aim is to establish whether or not they are really the remains of the couple who were shot at the military base near Targoviste after a summary trial over Christmas 1989. Forensic specialists have taken body tissue samples from both bodies, which will undergo DNA testing. These results will be compared with DNA from Valentin Ceaucescu, the couple’s only living child. The bodily remains will then be buried again
