With poaching escalating in the country, volunteers have set up ‘rangers brigades’ to escort the elephants. The initiative is now under way in the northern regions of Mopti, Timbuctu and Gao. They are the very same areas where the number of elephants substantially dropped from 550 in 1972 to 354 in 2010.
